Whale watching

It's hard to see in this picture but this a whale tail. We went on a whale watch, one of the greatest things to see. The whales come to the Islands from Alaska to mate and give birth to their calves. Whale season starts in November and lasts through May. March is peak whale season in Hawaii, this is the reason we went this month. The whales do not eat the entire time they are in the Hawaiian waters. There is not food there for them. They simply mate and give birth. The female whale is the head of the pack. Many male whales have to fight each other to win over the female. Which ever male can hang with the female the longest is the one she chooses to mate with. They say that a whale can have two calves at a time but the mom can only choose one to feed. She only produces enough milk for one which is 100 gallons a day. They also say that only one in three calves will make it back to the Alaskan waters. They either are not strong enough to make the swim or they are killed by sharks or sometimes even other whales. We learned so much and had a great time seeing how whales live in the Hawaiian waters. Maybe some day we'll head to Alaska and see them there too, I'm sure Ant will love that idea!
